Text Box: About Rotary Rotary International is a worldwide association of service clubs, founded in 1905, which meet locally every week. It now has over 1.2 million members in over 29,000 clubs in 161 countries, with over 1800 clubs in Great Britain & Ireland. Rotary members come from all walks of life, representing almost every occupation under the sun and a wide range of ages. A wide cross-section of membership is the essence of a good club and makes for more enjoyable fellowship. Rotherham Rotary Club was formed in 1921, and has around 50 members. It meets every week on a Wednesday lunchtime. It also has a sister club, Rotherham Sitwell, which meets on a Thursday evening. Speakers feature regularly on the agenda at the meetings. Rotary is a service organisation, which means that, while there is a significant social element, members engage in activities that give comfort to those in need in our society. Fund raising is important, and in recent years Rotherham Rotary Club has raised thousands of pounds for local charities through events such as an annual Swimathon, the famous Rotherham Roundwalk, and Golf am-am tournaments. But Rotary members, known as 'Rotarians', particularly enjoy hands-on projects such as helping with the upkeep of the Rotherham Hospice gardens. Rotary International also undertakes world-wide projects such as the current Polio-plus campaign which has made a major contribution towards the elimination of this disease.

Attracting new members is vital to a Rotary club's long term success, and so clubs put a great deal of emphasis on expanding their membership with enthusiastic and service-minded individuals.
Prospective members must actively hold -or be retired from -a professional, proprietary, executive or managerial position. And they must have the desire and ability to serve and to meet the club's attendance requirements for its weekly meetings.
An important distinction between Rotary and other organizations is that membership in Rotary is by invitation. However this should not stop anyone who feels that they might like to become a Rotarian from indicating an interest, either by speaking to a Rotarian, or by getting in touch with a local Club - with no obligation on either side.
